I feel like my life has been in this crazy hyper-drive mode for the past couple weeks. Every day goes by so fast, and it's pretty much the same thing: wake up way too early, go to class, study, eat dinner, and then study some more. I feel like time is speeding past me and that so many new developments have occurred... and then I look at my calendar and realize only a week has passed. It's crazy. My concept of time has completely been warped. I've never experienced anything like it.
I'm really starting to understand why law is so hard... it's not like every other field of study where things are black and white--where you are taught the information and then just have to absorb and memorize it. The law is all grey--in class every day, you go over these cases where one judge says one thing and another judge says the complete opposite on the same topic--you see the principles being bent backwards and forwards--and then you leave class having to try to compact all of these complexities into one overriding principle in your outline. I'm starting to really understand what my Civ Pro teacher means when he says "If you want answers, then law may not be the field for you. This isn't like math or science or medicine, people. You have to figure it out what you think is right and how the law is going to be used--there are no answers here." That's not to say that law is completely subjective, either. While there may not be one right answer--there are definitely many, MANY wrong ones.

I feel like my brain is always working, always thinking... whether I be asleep, hanging out with friends, watching TV, or whatever else it is that I find time to do. Could I be have been held liable for hitting the car next to me as I pulled into my parking spot last night? Was there an occurrence of actus reus and mens rea? If I did a hit and run, would I be convicted of a crime malum in se or malum prohibitum? Or would any of this even matter--would the judge just simply interpret the statute to hold strict liability and then direct a verdict against me?
I'm telling you, it never ends.
(The photo is supposed to represent me being serious and thinking about the law. Also, I mostly put it in because the guy to Elle's left looks exactly like Mr. Web Designer, which is funny.)
Aside from the complexity that I'm learning is the law, a number of additional developments have occurred in my life. I have classified these developments into two categories: "Things That Are Awesome" and "Things That Are Not Awesome." Let's begin.
Things That Are Awesome:
-Finally getting my car washed after like two months
-My intramural softball team winning its first game
-Gossip Girl starting up again tonight
-My family coming to visit me this weekend
-Getting feedback/a grade in Lawyering Skills (This isn't to say that the grade I got was good or bad--the existence of the grade itself is a reason to be happy. If there's anything I miss about undergrad, it's having grades... I never have any idea how I'm doing in any of my freaking classes because our grades are generally just whatever we get on the final and I don't like it.)
-Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
-La Jolla
-Mr. 31 and his fabulous impressions
-Laughing really, really hard
-Having Chipotle for the first time
-Batting cages
-my hilarious nocturnal roommate
-Lani Livingston
-Panera Bread
-The temperature on the first floor of the LRC
-Diet Coke
-Personality tests
-Being Amanda Wiesner's twin
-The juicy gossip in Section C
-The even juicier "secret romance" of Section C
-The fact that everyone in the world somehow knows that I am in the "secret romance" of Section C.
-The arrival of Fall
-Going to school at the 5th most scenic campus in the United States
-And of course, Instagram:
Things That Are Not Awesome:
-Getting two parking tickets within the same week
-BYU losing horrifically to the U
-Scraping my car up against the car next to me as I pulled into my parking spot (Yes, this really did happen... I was not just making up a hypo.)
-Dropping my recently-replaced iPhone and cracking the screen, again.
-Not being able to have Yogurtland or anything delicious because Lani and I decided we want to be skinny.
-Getting pelted in the thigh with a very fast-flying softball
-Fruit flies aka Satan's minions
-Being in desperate need of a haircut and thus constantly looking like I have dreadlocks
-Growing increasingly pale and out of shape due to new permanent residence in the library
-Being poor
Fortunately, I think that my pros have been outweighing my cons as of late. However, that is not to say I'm always loving this crazy roller coaster I'm definitely on. I was talking to my roommate about my theory that if something really good happens to you, something bad has to happen in order to balance the good out and make life fair. Considering how many fabulous things have been happening to me since I moved to San Diego, it's really hard for me to ever get too upset over the bad things. At the end of the day, I just know that they have to be there. Otherwise, my life would just be too perfect.
That sounds really pretentious, I know. When I started this blog, I never wanted to be one of those girls who does nothing but gush about how fabulous her life is, trying to make it out to be this model that every other person on the planet should strive for. I hate girls like that. Don't be fooled into thinking that is what this is. You see, I have been living in Provo for the past three years, where my life was far different than it is now. My college experience had generally consisted of bundles of judgment, weekends spent hanging out with myself, psycho roommates, mean ex-boyfriends, a seemingly infinite number of trials, and way too much undue pressure to get married and live a life that is not my own. I learned so much at BYU and would never give away that time in my life, but I have to admit that it was generally a very, very hard time (independent of the kindness exhibited by certain individuals--you know who you are and how much I value you.)
So, contrasted against what I have been used to in college, San Diego makes me so, so happy. It's just finally the right fit and that in itself makes me absolutely ecstatic. I'm sorry if I am annoying. Please have patience with me whenever I obsess over how awesome things are here. It's just so exciting!
Moral of my story is that so many good things have been happening. So hey, I'll take the hits.
Give me the $100 worth of parking tickets. Let my "Things That Are Not Awesome" list keep growing.
At the end of the day, I firmly believe I'm still ending up on top.
